These are described from the viewpoint of their development history, current status, implementation, and use cases. The concept of "taxon treatment" from the viewpoint of taxonomy mark-up into XML is discussed. TaxonX and taXMLit are primarily designed for legacy literature, the former being more lightweight and with a focus on recovery of taxon treatments, the latter providing a much more detailed set of tags to facilitate data extraction and analysis. TaxPub is an extension of the National Library of Medicine Document Type Definition (NLM DTD) for taxonomy focussed on layout and recovery and, as such, is best suited for mark-up of new publications and their archiving in PubMedCentral. All three schemas have their advantages and shortcomings and can be used for different purposes. https://w3id.org/spaces/pensoft/test/aifaircompendia/zookeys.150.2213 http://www.w3.org/1999/02/22-rdf-syntax-ns#type https://w3id.org/kpxl/gen/terms/Project https://w3id.org/spaces/pensoft/test/aifaircompendia/zookeys.150.2213 http://www.w3.org/1999/02/22-rdf-syntax-ns#type https://w3id.org/kpxl/gen/terms/Space https://w3id.org/spaces/pensoft/test/aifaircompendia/zookeys.150.2213 http://www.w3.org/2000/01/rdf-schema#label XML schemas and mark-up practices of taxonomic literature https://w3id.org/spaces/pensoft/test/aifaircompendia/zookeys.150.2213 https://w3id.org/kpxl/gen/terms/hasAdmin https://orcid.org/0000-0002-1267-0234 https://w3id.org/spaces/pensoft/test/aifaircompendia/zookeys.150.2213 https://w3id.org/kpxl/gen/terms/hasAdmin https://orcid.org/0000-0002-2186-5033 https://w3id.org/spaces/pensoft/test/aifaircompendia/zookeys.150.2213 https://w3id.org/kpxl/gen/terms/hasRootDefinition https://w3id.org/np/RA1Qf4eH7vOQeb4oLFKaI2B2yExZVKUhbM3oVHvRrQQig https://w3id.org/np/RA1Qf4eH7vOQeb4oLFKaI2B2yExZVKUhbM3oVHvRrQQig/provenance https://w3id.org/np/RA1Qf4eH7vOQeb4oLFKaI2B2yExZVKUhbM3oVHvRrQQig/assertion http://www.w3.org/ns/prov#wasDerivedFrom https://doi.org/10.3897/zookeys.150.2213 https://w3id.org/np/RA1Qf4eH7vOQeb4oLFKaI2B2yExZVKUhbM3oVHvRrQQig/pubinfo https://orcid.org/0000-0002-1267-0234 http://xmlns.com/foaf/0.1/name Tobias Kuhn https://w3id.org/np/RA1Qf4eH7vOQeb4oLFKaI2B2yExZVKUhbM3oVHvRrQQig http://purl.org/dc/terms/created 2026-08-21T10:05:53Z https://w3id.org/np/RA1Qf4eH7vOQeb4oLFKaI2B2yExZVKUhbM3oVHvRrQQig http://purl.org/dc/terms/creator https://orcid.org/0000-0002-1267-0234 https://w3id.org/np/RA1Qf4eH7vOQeb4oLFKaI2B2yExZVKUhbM3oVHvRrQQig http://purl.org/dc/terms/license https://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/ https://w3id.org/np/RA1Qf4eH7vOQeb4oLFKaI2B2yExZVKUhbM3oVHvRrQQig http://purl.org/nanopub/x/introduces https://w3id.org/spaces/pensoft/test/aifaircompendia/zookeys.150.2213 https://w3id.org/np/RA1Qf4eH7vOQeb4oLFKaI2B2yExZVKUhbM3oVHvRrQQig https://w3id.org/np/o/ntemplate/wasCreatedFromProvenanceTemplate http://purl.org/np/RAcTpoh5Ra0ssqmcpOgWdaZ_YiPE6demO6cpw-2RvSNs8 https://w3id.org/np/RA1Qf4eH7vOQeb4oLFKaI2B2yExZVKUhbM3oVHvRrQQig https://w3id.org/np/o/ntemplate/wasCreatedFromPubinfoTemplate https://w3id.org/np/RACJ58Gvyn91LqCKIO9zu1eijDQIeEff28iyDrJgjSJF8 https://w3id.org/np/RA1Qf4eH7vOQeb4oLFKaI2B2yExZVKUhbM3oVHvRrQQig https://w3id.org/np/o/ntemplate/wasCreatedFromPubinfoTemplate https://w3id.org/np/RAukAcWHRDlkqxk7H2XNSegc1WnHI569INvNr-xdptDGI https://w3id.org/np/RA1Qf4eH7vOQeb4oLFKaI2B2yExZVKUhbM3oVHvRrQQig https://w3id.org/np/o/ntemplate/wasCreatedFromTemplate https://w3id.org/np/RAKZJOvcZ5GSBXYBIq3yeP_LOVTvGiqKN7_2voTmLAxII https://w3id.org/np/RA1Qf4eH7vOQeb4oLFKaI2B2yExZVKUhbM3oVHvRrQQig/sig http://purl.org/nanopub/x/hasAlgorithm RSA https://w3id.org/np/RA1Qf4eH7vOQeb4oLFKaI2B2yExZVKUhbM3oVHvRrQQig/sig http://purl.org/nanopub/x/hasPublicKey MIGfMA0GCSqGSIb3DQEBAQUAA4GNADCBiQKBgQCwUtewGCpT5vIfXYE1bmf/Uqu1ojqnWdYxv+ySO80ul8Gu7m8KoyPAwuvaPj0lvPtHrg000qMmkxzKhYknEjq8v7EerxZNYp5B3/3+5ZpuWOYAs78UnQVjbHSmDdmryr4D4VvvNIiUmd0yxci47dTFUj4DvfHnGd6hVe5+goqdcwIDAQAB https://w3id.org/np/RA1Qf4eH7vOQeb4oLFKaI2B2yExZVKUhbM3oVHvRrQQig/sig http://purl.org/nanopub/x/hasSignature WUyWXnPTDIaIp3Rvv4jsWT0QijN4w6ka9FjMdGpVVm+vH52VZ4tOw5uHoBuhDpTN5qjVit9ujptEoE6LaBx7U27ltFSpCHtvehL7CZ3JIAd5PTXJ1fU4mWkEtZe1uZ8O5nA9m6DvrFw9xJ/P/ckq/QO4e8tgZz9jjuq0XYAmNWo= https://w3id.org/np/RA1Qf4eH7vOQeb4oLFKaI2B2yExZVKUhbM3oVHvRrQQig/sig http://purl.org/nanopub/x/hasSignatureTarget https://w3id.org/np/RA1Qf4eH7vOQeb4oLFKaI2B2yExZVKUhbM3oVHvRrQQig https://w3id.org/np/RA1Qf4eH7vOQeb4oLFKaI2B2yExZVKUhbM3oVHvRrQQig/sig http://purl.org/nanopub/x/signedBy https://orcid.org/0000-0002-1267-0234
