Traditional citations treat scholarly works as monolithic units, providing no machine-readable indication of what is being cited—a finding, a method, a dataset, or mere background. This imprecision blocks reliable knowledge accumulation, frustrates systematic reviews, and prevents AI systems from constructing trustworthy knowledge graphs. This paper introduces ScienceLive (https://platform.sciencelive4all.org/), a platform that addresses the gap by combining nanopublications—atomic, independently citable assertions with full provenance—with the Citation Typing Ontology (CiTO) to produce precise, machine-actionable citation links. ScienceLive's three-layer architecture (Assertion, Provenance, Publication Info) anchors each unit with a Trusty URI and disseminates it through the decentralized nanopublication network. A hybrid LLM pipeline pairs traditional reference-parsing tools with language models for citation-intent classification, and a Zotero plugin lets researchers create typed nanopublications inside their existing workflow. Case studies from LifeWatch ERIC (a PRISMA-compliant review on quantum computing for biodiversity yielding 238 nanopublications), the FAIR2Adapt climate-adaptation project, and agroecology partnerships illustrate how stackable citations bridge siloed communities. The paper itself is published as 21 nanopublications, demonstrating the approach reflexively. Open challenges remain around LLM hallucination and post-publication verification, which the authors are beginning to address through integration with the FORRT replication framework—creating a trust gradient from unverified extractions through author-validated claims to independently replicated findings.
